rover 25 head gasket

I took my car to a local garage to get a new alternator fitted which was done fine. The next day driving to work the temp gauge was in the red i managed to get to work opened the bonnet and the coolent thing and steam just came out lots of it. I took it back to the garage they bled the air out filled up the coolent and said it needs a new head gasket (�350.00 at the cheapest) I think the garage is having a laugh the coolent level has remained the same the oil seems fine, no white mess and the exaust has nothing coming out i believe the garage may have let out my coolent for an extra job. Any answers would be appreciated.

Fitting a new alternater would not affect the coolant system unless they did not fit the drive belt properly or did not fit one at all.

Or is your coolant fan electric and working ok?

As everything is ok as you have said and you have no loss of power keep a close eye on it and see how it goes.

Head gasket failures common due to very low coolant capacity of the engine.

It may be you have a head gasket failure or it may be that the garage saw an overheating Rover 25 and did a bit of a knee jerk reaction.

If your not seeing any other symptoms of head gasket failure I'd wonder about things like water pumps before diving straight in for the head


But they do have a reputation for head gasket failure so I wouldn't be too surprised. Keep a close eye on it and see what happens

This happened to my mates car when he left off the oic filler cap and cost him �1200! (quite a while ago)
