power steering noise inside car?

I can hear a whining noise inside my car which i am assuming is coming from my power steering as when i move my steering wheel it gets louder but lowers again when i stop turning it.Is this okay or is there possibly something else wrong.As i say its a whining noise and there is no knocking or thumping noises.My car is a 1.6 vauxhall astra club

You may feel a slight vibration through the steering wheel too - It could be the power steering fluid is low. If you put full lock on and keep turning you usually get a similar noise. Check the fluid and the pipes leading to the fluid resevoir. I had an Escort once (someone had to) and the pipe came off tot he power steering and made a rightmess of the engine bay. Have a look as soon as poss. It may need topping up which is a very easy thing to do. If it's all Ok then there might be something else that a mechanic needs to look at and therefore is a safety isue and better of getting someone to check it out properly.

I have a 1.6 Vauxhall Astra Club and it has the same problem!!!!!! Have you found out what it is yet????
The noise is like a whinning you're right. It gets louder when I steer to the left than the right, and I have checked the fluid levels nothing wrong there.....Anybody any ideas??

My 2000 Astra 1.4i has just started the same whining noise. It only happens when steering to the left, as with bazaatra. What transpired? Did you get to the bottom of it?
