If the fuel lines run along the engine block then the fuel can eventually get so hot that it starts to evaporate before it reaches the carb. or cylinders. That also explains why it is sluggish to start when hot as the engine and fuel must cool somewhat before full flow reaches the carb. again.
If that is the problem then check the thermostat and cooling system to make sure the engine isn't overheating or running too hot. You can also re-route the fuel lines away from the block so that they don't get so hot.
However, the problem may be something else. It may be the fuel pump starting to fail or possibly an ignition fault. It certainly sounds like its probably fuel evaporation though.

Hi Chris, at the risk of being too obvious, do the simple things first!! Carry out a 6000 mile service. Change plugs, points etc.Carefully examine inside of distributor cap for wear on pillars and the rotor arm- any signs of damp? If the ignition leads are old, may be worth changing. Clean off the top of the ignition coil-any signs of tracking? might be a fuel problem, as mentioned- have you had mot test for mixture /emmissions test lately-rich mixture would show up there. With a T2, you are probably not far from lots of help from local fellow owners/clubs etc seek them out and join in!!!! hope this is of some help.
