Road speed limit markings. Thoughts?

Just a question, I have not been speeding. The roads around my work are designated 20mph zones. The network runs for about several miles squared. The only markings to indicate this are 20mph signs on the entrances to this area and are not repeated inside the borders.
Today I noticed the police out with radar gun and thought of a question.
If you arrived to a relatives house asleep in the back of a taxi, to look after it while they were away in an emergency. You arise the next day and were insured to drive your relatives car and thought you would go out. Is it expected that your relatives would have to hammer home the 20 mph and remember to tell you in the midst of a crisis? There would be no way of knowing if you just left the house and drove a 30mph that the limit is 20, until the police I saw today would have stopped you.
Surely the road rule is that if the road is not 30mph then it is signed regularly with the limit?

This is a good question i know exactly what you mean one sigh to indicate a 20 mph zone as you enter. I have thought about this myself. i will be interested to see what people think.
It should surely have repeaters on the lamposts as a dual carrige way sometimes does in a built up area. I'd point it out to the local council they may be interested to find out that it doesn't ?
There are different rules for signs in 20mph zones, all explained here................

They do not need to have repeaters.
How sneaky. If you had a cynical mind, you'd think it had almost been planned so drivers would be unaware they were in a 20mph zone.
In my local area the police consider 20mph limits to be virtually unenforcable, but they do tend to bring the average speed down to below 30.
You do make an interesting point though.
