Sorry my above answer is competely wrong.
It might have been caused by something in the footwell displacing the cable. Try looking under the seats for the cable and wiggle it about, pushing it towards the back of the seat. This kept happening to my car and when i took it to the garage they said this is a common problem which can usually be fixed the above manner! They wouldn't even take any money. Hope this solves the problem (if you haven't tried it already!)

thank you all for your answers i did manage to ask the question to an mot tester today and no its not part of the mot, thanks also ladieshair no i havent tried what you suggested but will try it thanks again
perhaps on the wrong route here, but on a mondeo (and possibly other fords) if you take the battery power away for over 10 minutes, you shouldnt power the car back up for at least two hours, or the air bag light comes on.
i have to tell people this when they buy various parts from my work.
may or may not be of help
ladieshair is right....it's normally a cable that's come loose under the drivers seat...especially if it's a french car.
