How did we get into this situation? They now have roving vans photographing number plates along the street and comparing it with their database? Most are uninsured also no wonder their are many hit and run accidents. Not so helpful if you are innocent motorist!

What ogther techniques could be used so that they pay up? Cameras are installed in petrol garages. Why don't they record the number plate and with access to the national data base issue a ticket, or is that too simple?

By noting the number plates of cars at filling stations is not the total solution. What happens when a driver puts false number plates on his vehicle?
In todays Times it is reported that nearly 200 deaths a year are caused by uninsured drivers. These vehicles are also untaxed. Surely the take up of TV licences has a better system for getting people on the database?
A bit radical but why not do away with road tax.? I'm not advocating tax increases but the lost revenue could be made up by increasing the tax on fuel.

Adding the road tax to fuel as been mentioned so many times in the past I wonder if there is a reason not to do so. With road pricing by the mile about to hit us imagine the fraud to avoid this also.
I kept reporting an untaxed van parked on a designated bay on a council estate - the dvla didn't want to know, dept of transport didn't want to know and neither did the council! I even sent in photos of my own car being hoisted away by the council's clampers which I had deliberately parked next to the van - i was ultimately in the wrong bay and it cost me nearly 300 quid that day trying to prove a point. needless to say the van was left sitting pretty. I got absolutely nowhere. So i'm not surprised by the situation at all.
