rear lights

i have a problem on a 2002 vw beetle when the brakes are applied with the lights on the tailgate and one of the other brake light comes on but the rear light on the other one goes out without the brake light coming on if that makes sense, any ideas ?

There must be some sort of electrical connector that has been disconnected, but when reconnected it has been partly turned and forced in.
Have you had any work done recently?

Sounds like a bad earth connection somewhere at the rear lamp clusters.

thanks woodchopper looks like i'll get the garage to check it out doesn't look an easy job to get to the lights
