Rip off
Just in case any other ABers didnt know, i have just received a letter from a debt collecting agency on behalf of the dvla!! for 80.
Reason: bought a car Feb 05 parked it on a friends drive as i went to live in Spain,(therefore it has never been on the road all that time) came back in August (just gone,) taxed it insured it etc... and apparently i have been fined because i didnt inform the DVLA that i wouldnt be driving the car during that time therefore would not be road taxing it!! i have asked all my friends and none aof them were aware that you have to inform the dvla of this??
according to them it came to fruition in july '04? seems a bit unfair cos i wasnt even living here, never mind driving the car? paid up grudgingly tho, but have been told to appeal (huh fat chance of me getting that back)

The information about it has been included with every road fund tax renewal notice since that date.
A year or two after the rules came into effect, I had a car which was off-road because I couldn't afford to repair it. I dutifully filled in the SORN form and sent it off to DVLA. When the next tax renewal form arrived, I was confident that I could ignore it because I'd already advised DVLA that the car was not on the public highway. I was therefore 'less than pleased' when I received notice of a fine I had to pay. I had failed to realise that, when a car is already off the road at a tax renewal date, it's necessary to renew the SORN.
