What is the thinking behind car manufacturers, most of whom have done away with 'side rubbing strips', which, in my opinion, gave protection from other motorists who carelessly open doors in car parks and also added to a car's aesthetics.?

I also favour protection strip inserts on Bumpers. Everything of a single colour offends me.!!
