no mot insurance claim

My mot has expired by 1 month i need to make an insurance claim, will the insurers pay out?

I've just checked my policy document. Under 'General Conditions' it reads :"Your vehicle must be covered by a valid Department of Transport test (MOT) certificate if you need one by law". It's a standard policy document, issued by Kwik Fit insurance brokers, irrespective of the actual company that the policy is taken out with. So it seems likely that a similar provision will apply to your policy.

I've only ever made one claim on my motor insurance and I don't remember having to prove that the car had a valid MOT certificate. So it's possible that your insurance company might not ask about this. However, if they do, it seems likely that they would refuse to pay out.

thanks for that- i checked my policy and all they said was that it had to bein a roadworthy condition. It was 3 yrs old on 17 feb 2007.

You don't need to provide your MOT certificate - it's accessible to insurance companies on the database. You give your permission for it be accessed when you apply for the insurance.

they will automatically check ,as ethel says.so it looks like they wont pay out on a claim.

They may well pay out, but at a very much reduced rate to reflect the value of the vehicle without a test certificate; basically you'll get scrap value if it's a run of the mill car.

Most classic car policies cover you even when the car is sorned and untested: mine does, but you need to have a car that is a recognised classic with an agreed value- this however won't be the case if wer'e talking about a Focus or Mondeo!
