octane
Petrol is a blend of many different hydrocarbons with about 5 to 8 carbon atoms per molecule. Unleaded petrol has a high proportion of branched chain alkanes, cycloalkanes and aromatic molecules. Pure octane has an octane rating of 0 and is a very poor fuel for a petrol engine.
