Car door handle

The outside handle on my bmw no longer works. It feels like it isn't connected to anything inside the door. I have the door panel off, but can't figure out how to fix it. Any suggestions?

a wire of some sort is attached to the handle somewhere,which when the handle is pulled open ,opens the door lock,that is on most cars,it might have come off.

Further to Doctor Spock's answer, try to get hold of the Service Manual from Bentley. It is far more detailed than Haynes. It also costs about three times as much....
