mot for cat.c

can this be clarified. if a car is given a cat. c and the owner wishes to repair it and put it back on the road, the mot has to be renewed and a check carried out to ensure that the damage has been repaired. will the current mot be void immediately it is given the cat c. or will it be ok until the checks and new mot are done?
the point i'm trying to find out is this, if it is void immediately and something was to happen either on the way to having it repaired or having it checked would you still be insured?

the car must be tested at a VOSA station,its called a vic test and is basically to see if the car is the car in question,ie all vin numbers etc are correct, and any repairs are up to the standard of roadwortiness,the current MOT is still in force until you get it re tested at a normal MOT garage,hope this helps.

the VOSA check that is needed is not concerned with the repairs or even if the car is roadworthy it is simply to confirm the ID of the car. You will be committing an offence if you drive the car in an unroadworthy condition but i believe the existing mot remains valid

thanks, the current mot runs out in jan 08 so this means that the current mot is ok until it expires, or will it have to be renewed with the vic test, or does the vic test include a new mot. is there a time limit to having all this done?

the VIC test only checks id numbers and registration it takes a couple of minutes and the car goes nowhere near a ramp, it is not interested in the standard of repairs

rdv,if you bothered to read my post,exactly what i said,and it does go on a ramp,we have a centre near our garage in watford,and we are down there on courses quite a lot and can assure you it does also get checked for the repairs carried out,but mainly for the id as i and you said.

To clarify one point, there is no requirement for the VIC test to assess the roadworthiness of any repairs.

The check is for evidence that sufficient repairs have been carried out to support the intention of returning the vehicle to a roadworthy condition..

I also use the Watford centre and instead of sitting in the waiting room decided to watch it done. Apart from opening the bonnet the car did'nt move, no ramp, no check on repairs only �36 removed from my pocket for 2 minutes work

norman is right . if it was only for identification purposes this could be picked up at a normal testing station. it also depends on the type of structural damage to the car as to what degree of checks they would carry out. (and yes i am an mot tester and yes i do work local to a vosa local area office) bishopbriggs in glasgow.

The VIC is only for identification purposes - Vehicle Identity Check. It is a more intensive check than that made at the MOT as it compares the record of previous accident damage with evidence of damage repair as well as checking other components to confirm the age and identity of the vehicle.

Although the VIC does not check roadworthiness, if any significant defects are present, they can prevent it being used, but it is not a check of vehicle condition or roadworthiness.
