I know a couple of Audis (VW related) that can ONLY be reset by Audi. You have to take the choice: reasonable service cost but put up with a small light on or flashing digits every start og the car, or pay full whack for the service.
Any decent garage with the right data and the latest diagnostic equipment can put out most service lights on most cars.
At work we haven't come across any make of car that we haven't been able to put out the service light using our Bosch diagnostic system or the latest Autodata disc.
VW's are actually one of the easiest to do, and we've not had problems even with the latest 07 plate Audi's.

If it has the longlife service intervals it needs to be plugged in to diagnostic equipment to put the light out.
If it has the standard service intervals this is the procedure:-
There should be a small button down and to the left of the speedometer (button A), and one down and to the right of the rev counter (button B).
Press and hold button A.
Switch ignition on.
The word "SERVICE" should appear in the trip recorder display.
Release button A.
Turn button B to the right to reset the display.
Switch the ignition off.
Hope this helps.
