No breakdown cover but car has broken down!

Hi,

my husband got a new car only 2 weeks ago and it's broken down - totally dead, didn't start after work yesterday, seems to be starter motor as jump starting it hasn't worked. we don't have breakdown cover and he's looked into getting it but they will only cover a car that's working now. is this the case with all providers. does anyone have any advice?

Who did he buy the car from? Can't you take it back there? Or was it a private sale? If you are trying to get breakdown cover why are you telling them the car is already broken? Just ring up and say you want cover and mention nothing about the car then a few days later call them out and get it fixed then

is it a new car or used new car,if its brand new,then he should take it back to the garage,if its a used car from a garage,then the same applies,if he bought it privately,then thats a bit of bad luck,he will have to get it to a garage to be fixed or call out a mobile mechanic.breakdown cover is no good at the moment,as they wont fix it.they would just tow you to a garage.

even if he had breakdown cover they wouldn't fit a new starter motor, they would get you home or to a garage, possibly get you started at the road side, that's it. Breakdown cover is not "fix your car" cover, It's "get you home" cover.

to diagnos a bad starter, you need to check power going to the starter, should have constant power at the big wire approx. 12 volts, and at the little wire when the key is turned to the start position, should also have 12 volts. if you have 12 volts at the big wire and not the little wire, your starter is ok and you need to check fuses, or your ignition switch
