no theyd have to ask for it to be protected.

Plus even if protected that is just the discount received on a premium. So following a claim the premium will increase even with protected NCB

If its not protected I think they will lose a proportion of the NCB depending on the claim
it depends on whether your inclusion as a named driver is included in the protection, you would have to ask the insurance company. their full no claims is not auto matically protected,it has to be paid for in another small premium and myself,i doubt whether you would be included.
oh thanks NTD, i didnt realise that not all drivers were automatically covered. I shall have to have a word with my broker
Firstly, most insurers only recognise 5 or 6 years of no claims - some may recognise a bit more, but not 28!
Secondly, the bonus is only protected if the policyholder has requested it, and paid an extra premium (normally between 5 - 10 %)
Thirdly, if the bonus is protected and a claim is made against the policy, then only a 'life' is lost - but the discount off the premium remains the same - as long as they renew with the same insurer. Some companies will transfer the bonus, but the choice is limited on the open market.
Hope this makes sense - it does to me, but I've worked in insurance for about 18 years!
i know i had to pay 77 to protect my 4 years no claims with tesco and ive been insured with them for 4 years.
