did you damage the old head or any of the valves or did it warp
take it to your local pub - it daren't smoke there
seriously tho' it was same on mine few years back turned that was valve seals / guides
if you only warped the head by 1mm check by using steel ruler or known flat edge it can be skimmed usually 20-50 if there is no warping of the head or damage use the old head
If its the valve stem seals it will smoke when you start it up (after its been sitting for a while)

If its a general smokiness (but without the smoke on start up) it is more likely that you have'nt had the head skimmed and the valves re-ground.

It may run like it for ages or not..
