I had a friend over from South Africa a couple of months ago and they emailed me today saying they have received a letter from the police saying she had been caught on camera doing 35mph in a 30 zone. She wants to know if she has to send her license back to the UK and if so can she pay the fine in rands our does she have to pay in 's. She doesn't have a bank account apparently.

I very, very , very much doubt it is genuine.

I would tell her to ignore it. Even in the remote chance it may be real, If she doesn't turn up to court there are no extradition laws for minor traffic offences and I can swear by almighty God a British bobby is not going to knock on her door in RSA!!!!!
If she was driving a hire car the police could trace her from the details the hire company has. She could write to the police who have issued the fine to check the fine is genuine. If she comes back to the UK it would show up as fine owing when she enters the country/
If it is genuine she will have to pay in - if she decides to do so at all. She need not send the licence as there is no power to put points on it - a note to that effect would help queries
