Does anyone know what he can do? It's such a nightmare he might lose his home that he owns! Can anyone please help us?

Maybe what Zac says is true.
But the starting principle is that he took on a lease for a period of time, and so he is responsible to the brewery until the end of that period of time. If he wants to assign the lease to another party, he would have to find a party willing to pay the current lease sums - or fund the difference himself.
But maybe an accountant could help him negotiate the big chain's offer up
