My 2000 1.6 8v astra is on 62,000 miles and needs a cambelt change can anyone recommend a mechanic? I have called up parts people and the belt ranges from 11-17, but the garages talk about tensioners and valves and all i want is the belt changed. Can anyone advise on the job, i was going to buy the belt and get it fitted by a mechanic, but it seems to be getting very complicated!

Yes, I know a very good mechanic who would be happy to do this for you.

He is the local mechanic at ***** on Shetland, so would have to charge the travelling - probably about 750. + the time to fit it - say 50.

Give him a call, don`t know the number but is in directory under ***** MECHANIC
That is spelled T W A T T
Listen, mate, if you want a serious answer try to sound less like a tw**t yourself.

What about telling us where you live for example. Even then I think most people would still think you a tw*t for not being able to sort this out for yourself.
why are you trying to scrimp on the job, just phone 3 or 4 garages and get the best quote, you cant just buy the belt and get it fixed,it does not work like that.
Errr Vauxhall have good mechanics....
There's a little garage in a place called Aidensfield. I saw it on the TV. Ask for Mr. Scripps. He should be able to help.
Many Vauxhall engines built around the time of yours, suffered from failure of cambelt pulleys/tensioners - the pulleys/tensioners being made of plastic, which were breaking up. In an attempt to eliminate the problem, Vauxhall reduced the recommended cambelt/pulley/tensioner change interval.

It would be a false economy to replace the cambelt only, when the manufacturer recommends replacement of the pulleys/tensioners at the same time (it is more likely that the pulleys/tensioners will fail, rather than the cambelt break.).
for christ sake this is one of the most easy timing belts you can ever get!!! belt kit will cost around 30 quid and should take around 40 minutes to change. so i wouldnt pay any more than 120/130 quid.
