Hi Lady the reverse light switch is fitted to the side of the gearbox with two wires leading down to it hubby should be able chage it , if you have the new switch he can then easily identify it. If as you say it is a 1998 it is certainly not under the gearstick.
Yep, your model year is favorite to have to jack the car up (support on an axle stand or you may be injured or worse), remove switch (prepare for oil leakage & have some of the correct oil to top up). Later years of your model require removal of the battery, battery tray to access switch which is on top of the gearbox. Allen keys (before you rush out & buy a set, unless Poundland of course) have 6 points with STRAIGHT sides, whereas, most car makers have for some years used "Torx" type socketed bolts which have INDENTED side between the 6 points. Whoever suggested you can do it from inside car must have very, very small paws!
Oh, did you you check fuse 1st, & the elec trical connector plug would be my 2nd port of call.
