New driver accident

My stepson, who is 17, passed his test on Friday. He crashed into a roundabout on Tuesday, mowing down 2 signs, a black and white deviation sign and a lit up keep left sign. No one was hurt and no other cars were involved,but the traffic police turned up and arrested my stepson for dangerous driving, they said to him at the time they estimate his speed at between 80 and 85 mph, it was a 50 mph speed limit. He was breathalised, negative, and taken to the police station till he was released on bail till 15th March. His car has been written off and the insurers have made an offer.
What will the police do now, will he lose his licence and have to retake his test?

If he is banned (and dangerous driving carries a mandatory disqualification of 12 months minimum) he will not have to retake his test.

If he is awarded points (speeding carries 3-6 points or a ban, careless driving 3-9 points or a ban) and is awarded 6 or more points his licence will be revoked and he will revert to provisional status.

Note that whatever he is convicted of he will not receive points and a ban, only one or the other.

Personally, I hope he does get banned and will consider his actions in future. If it was up to me I think he should spend some time in prison, but it is highly unlikely this will happen.
Too many young people think they know it all and can handle anything and unfortunately don't consider or care about other road users. They just want to try to look big and clever in front of their friends, when actually it shows how pathetic they really are.
As somebody who's family has been torn apart by a stupid thoughtless idiot who acted in a similar way, leaving my brother with a permanent disability, I am insensed that the parents of this reckless child, and at 17 that is all he is, would even consider allowing him to have a car which is capable of being driven at such speeds. Unless, of course, they also behave in the same way and if that is the case then they should also be punished.

unfortunately if he WAS doing those speeds, he deserves to be put away in my opinion.

Lets hope he gets a ban and a very hefty fine. Should teach him a lesson.
