High petrol usage?

a few days ago i stupidly ran out of petrol and had to leave the car till i got some more to put in. ever since then the petrol gauge is going down faster than usual and ive barely been anywhere. any suggestions why? thanks

just a wild guess, but maybe the dirt that is occurs when a tank is low is compromising then sensor... I've always been told not to drive on a low tank due to all the rubbish that builds up at the bottom of the tank... although this is as i said, just a guess...
