how much the rev counter goes up depends on how hard you push on accelerator, push it right to floor revs will go up to nearly red line before gearbox changes up push it gently gearbox will change up much sooner. if the gearbox is in a high gear and you push accelerator right to floor it will change down automatically for maximum acceleration.

start it up, foot on brake, put it in 'D', release brake, and off you go!
R is reverse
1,2,3 gears you would use if you are towing or need low gears for steep hills/ heavy loads.
P- when you stop the car you put it in park, only when stationary
D-Drive, this is the main gear you will be in for everyday drive

no its not a stupid question, u try driving an automatic after driving a manual for many years. i knw its easy to drive and everyone knows the basics, but what im talking about is should i just floor the accelerator or should i press and let go smoothly and press and let go again like im just changing gears and would this be better on petrol. by the way if i was f*&^%%ing stupid i wouldnt have just brought myself a brand new top of the range range rover sport automatic, triptronic diesel, with a private number plate.
