Its ludicrous! When I drove to Austria you bought your tax for Holland, Belgium and Germany before getting on the ferry. This was a computerised system (which has since been replaced by a system that took a year to get working!). In Austria you had to buy tax cards. On these you filled out one for each day. I admit I only filled them out every other day, but if you were caught without one, it was a 2000 instant fine. This system has also been replaced by a computerised system. In Hungary you had to fill out a 'kilometre form' to show how much driving you had done. We do not need a super duper system in this country because we are an island. There are a limited number of ports and the tunnel. All that has to be done is when the trucks (or other vehicles for that matter) drive through the passport check they are asked if they've paid. If not, the officer just says "That will be 10 (or whatever) please" and if they refuse its back on the boat! The Government (not just Labour, Tories were as bad) have been prevaricating about this for years. What is the problem? Its not rocket science, or have I over simplified it??
