Can anyone give me an idea of how long a life has an automatic gearbox given an average motorists use

Not a techical answer to your question but my Rover 623gsi auto has done 145000 miles and still works like a dream. The first auto I have had and I prefer it it to manual.
Most auto boxes, looked after and not abused, will see out the cars body.

Use premium Plus oil in servicing, Try not to knock down if not necessary, accelerate before you reach a hill so it wont knock up on the actual hill, and avoid cruis control for short spells and as said it will outlast the car.

Except if it is a French car!!!!
