My car ( R reg Astra) won't start, the electrical fault light is flashing; could it be a flat battery? Would this cause the electrical fault light to come on? I know Jack s*** about cars..

Flat battery, alternator problem or plain ignition problem. Could be any one. Good luck finding a reliable garage!!
If your car has an immobiliser (I think it will do)then a flashing engine warning light. when the ignition is on. can mean the car is not accepting the key. Try a spare key.
