i remember seeing white wall tyres years ago,but they may have been painted by the car company.have looked on the net but it isnt easy to find??
I went to http://www.ask.com/ and typed in "why are tires black" (American spelling). One of the sites it came up with was: http://www.properautocare.com/classic-motoring/whyaretirbla. html It says this: "To protect against ozone and UV damage, a stabilizer molecule called a competitive absorber is blended with the tire polymer. Competitive absorbers work by capturing and absorbing UV radiation and converting it to heat which is dissipated harmlessly. All tire manufacturers use the same competitive absorber, carbon black. This is why all tires are black...why tires are not available in designer colors."
So you can't see the dirt.
Tyres are actualy a very dark brown. You can still get white wall tyres, I know this as I own American cars, though I use those with the white raised letters as white wall tyres are more suited to Cadillacs and 50's & 60's cars than sports cars like camaro, transam, mustang, etc.
I have just been out and looked at my tyres, and you could possibly argue a very, very, very slightly blue shade of black, but they don't look brown. (Except for the mud)
Because nobody has painted them pink yet
Actually that's all a load of rubbish you can get coloured tryes...I have seen them on a few bikes and you can see them at the following links:

its the same story as to why are jeans blue or black? if they were red it wouldnt look right.
i have seen colored tires on some sporty modified cars. you have to order them they do not come on the car when its new. the reason they are black may be because black matches every color and that is one less thing to consider when you buy a car
