Ford Fiesta, overheated, died, resurrected

I have a 94 Ford Fiesta. Last weekend the oil low indicator came on. I checked the oil and it didn't register on the dipstick so I filled it up. No sign of leaks.
Yesterday on the motorway - lost power, water temp in the red, steam coming out of the bonnet. Drove over to the hard shoulder and called the breakdown service.
After cooling down for an hour I could start the engine. I noticed that bubbles were appearing in the water/filler expansion tank.
It runs but its not very smooth at all.
Any idea what the problem is? How much should a garage quote to fix it?

hello. could be a new engine required, first of all ref.the oil it could of burnt it all(,broken piston ring?) ref. the water, blown head gasket & damage to the cylinders (picked up)or a cracked head. but they will need to take the head off first to see whats what. + it doe,s not matter if its petrol or diesel. also to take a fiesta head off takes about 1 hour, so find out there hourly rate to investgate.. hope this helps.
