Opening the bonnet of a Polo?

I know this is pathetic but I can't find my manual and I can't remember how to open the bonnet of my old Polo, it's a J reg so it's very old. I've searched and searched but I'm obviously missing it, I need to top up the water.

If the bonnet release isn't there, try looking under the instrument panel on the left.

I can't remember the year of the Polo I had, but on that one it was way over to the left next to the passenger door.
