It's not the car it's the driver..
They matched a BMW M3 against a (Green) Toyota Premus - Over the same distance at the same speed the BMW was better on fuel consumption.
I have owned sports motorcycles and sports cars, 4X4's, and family hatchbacks, and the harder you drive or ride, the more juice you use, thats a fact.
OK I know a 6.0 litre V8 is going to use more than a 1.1 Saxo, but it's also down to driving style..
The fun is in acceleration and fast driving, but the fun stops at the petrol pumps.
Remember : You can only spend a pound once.

Do performance and economy go together ?..
I suppose the answer is no.
My everyday 1 hr commute car is a Kia Picanto - My weekend car is an old restored 3.0 litre classic Jag.
35 to the Gallon or 12 to the Gallon ?.
Burn Money or Save Money ?
I always remember going to look at a Rolls Royce with a mate of mine.
He asked the salesman, how many miles to the gallon does it do ?.
The salesman replied : If you have got to ask a question like that, then you cannot afford a Rolls Royce.
Drive it - Spend It - Save It - But most of all enjoy it, because you only live once and life is just too short buddy !

I own a Skyline, a starlet turbo, and a Glanza turbo (auto)
Believe me fuel is an increasing problem as i use v max on all 3.
Point being, both the Starlet and Glanza have identical engines, one a manual the other auto, but i get a lot more miles with the auto, purely because of the way i drive them, both feel like they always want to go faster.
However with the auto, i just relax and drive reasonably normal and fuel consumption is at least 25% better.
Obviously i cant tell how you drive, but i should imagine with a Cooper driving it like it should be you are not being the most economical, check your revs not the speedo
All the experts say you should accelerate and change to higher gear asap to be most economical ( economical does not apply to 600bhp Skylines whatever you do :>) and it has been proven that if you use V Max sensibly it will give the same if not more MPG, and no i dont work for Shell....
