canal boat

i hired a canal boat for the first time recently. it was my job to steer.i had no problem going forward.can someone tell me how to manouver the boat to get it alongside to tie up.

When 5 or 6 feet away from the bank, gently steer away, so that the boat continues approaching the bank but is gradually straightening up. When nearly parallel, gently engage reverse gear. With luck (and then with practice!) the boat comes to a complete stop perfectly parallel to the bank with only a few inches between the boat and the bank. Tie up securely.
