Car hire in France

I'm flying to Perpignan on 16th July 2008 and will need to hire a basic car for one week. I have looked at quotes on the Internet which seem to start at around 180.00 (for a 26 year old driver).

I was wondering whether anybody could advise on whether it would be best to just go ahead and book something in advance or wait and see if there are any better deals when I get to Perpignan airport. Are there any companies that you would recommend going with or avoiding.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Always book ahead for hire in France in the peak months. I used to use Budget rentacar for France and found them the cheapest of the known companies.
Only risk hiring when you arrive if you are in a position where it does not matter if they have no vehicles - not unusual in Nice airport for e.g.
if you're visiting the Perpignan area again in the future, car hire and fuel are cheaper in Spain - so it might pay to consider using Gerona as your start point, notwithstanding the extra travel distance.

but for this time, try & avoid Ryanair's partner unless you can get out of the arrivals hall quickly - or you'll queue for ages......

Thank you for your advice. I'll get booking as soon as possible.
Do you actually need a car? Perpignan is well served by public transport networks.
