I stupidly filled up my company Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 CDTi 56 plate with petrol.
The car was well into the red so i filled it up to the top with V power petrol thinking it was Diesel. The tank is 9 / 10 filled with petrol. I then drove it for about 2 miles when i noticed it wasn't running right, i pulled over and then it hit me what i had done.
Am i able to totally drain the tank and fill it up with Diesel ? or is this going to cost me ?
the high pressure fuel pump gets its lubrication from the diesel fuel itself, without that effect the case hardened components become soft and disintegrate into swarf.
at best, properly flushing the entire fuel system could cost you 5k. at worst you'll need to replace the fuel pump, and possibly other components if any swarf has contaminated them - in which case prepare to spend 12k.
generally, mis-fuelling isn't covered by insurance.
you may be able to get away with getting all the fuel out of the tank & then replace the fuel filter then hope for the best,if you didn't drive it too far you may be ok but as 1 of the other replie's say it may have caused further dmg.
5k and 12k!!??? i dont know what garage you go to mate but i think i would change, it really depends on how much petrol has got up to the fuel pump and injectors, you wont know what damage,if any, has been done until its drained of petrol and then re-filled with diesel and see if it will run/start properly
