peugeot 206 speedo problem

my speedo has stopped working on my Peugeot 206 1.9D its on a "y" Plate 2001

the temp rev and fuel gauges still work fine

speedo got mind of its own gets up to 30 then just drops straight down to zero then its jumps all over the place mot of the time it just stays on zero!

any ideas what this could be please??

sounds like a faulty speedo cable to me
