what is the proper action to take when an emergency vehicle is behind you on a single road with no oncoming trafffic? can you indicate and turn off to the right to get out the way and leave the road open for the emergency vehicle?

Surely you should pull over to the left to allow it to overtake in the normal way, or have I misunderstood your question?

Pull over to the left but if there is no oncoming traffic it will overtake anyway. I'm assuming the vehicle is on an emergency call.

Are you asking if you should pull over to the right so the emergency vehicle can carry straight on without having to pull out to overtake? yes you can but I wouldn't . Slow up and let them overtake.

If you pull to the left, the emergency vehicle driver will feel you are predictable, and will be able to go passed at speed with confidence.

If you pull to the right, he or she will not have confidence that they can predict your actions. They will therefore have to slow down more.

As we are not sure which country you are in m33k4t, all you need to do is to move over to the side of the road that you do NOT overtake on, indicating at the same time, so that the driver of the emergency vehicle can see that you have seen him/her (as Panic says, do the predictable). I would also slow down if necessary to give them extra space and to get past you as soon as they can.
