Golf VR6 gear change probs

iv got a p reg golf mk 3 vr6.
the problem is i cannot get 1st, 2nd or reverse(all on the left side of the box) I used to be able to get them but it started getting harder and harder now i cant get them at all so my car is stuck ;( A mechanic said the gearbox was fine but cant fix the problem. When the gearstick if free in neutral it hardly moves to the left but goes a lot further over to the right which i think is stopping me getting the left sided gears. If anyone has any suggetions/help i would appreciate it thanks

Check your gear linkages, Visible from under the bonnet I think you will find the fault lies there.

This happened to my wife's 52 plate Polo just last week. Apparently there is a plastic holding-clip which broke. Got it replaced inc labour for �20. Don't know if it's the same but it's likely to be similar.

Worn gear linkage on mk2,3 & 4 Golfs is so common that you can buy a complete refurb kit from your VW dealer. Takes about 3-4 hours to do the complete job if you can get the car up in the air (ramps or similar). A lot longer if not!!

Got to your nearest VW dealer parts dept and ask about it.
