can a person drive a cab/unit without an hgv licence ?can you pay private road tax for the cab ?
a friend said years ago you could drive on a normal licence so long as you did not have the trailer connected and you only paid as a private vehicle.

He is talikng rubbish.
I always thought as long as the cab unit on it's own weighs under 7.5tonnes (and assuming you can drive up to 7.5tonnes on your license) then yes you can drive it. not sure about the tax though
No, the cab unit will be plated up to the maximum train weight, of perhaps 38 - 44 tons. You would need a licence for that weight.

If it had the fifth wheel removed so that it was incapable of towing a trailer, then I think you could drive it on a C licence (rigid lorry), but I wouldn't swear to that.

Chris Eubank drives a tractor unit as his personal transport - but he does have an HGV licence.

chris passed the HGV test, but didn't bother taking the articulated test.

i think my friend is thinking of years back , there was no speed limit on motorways when he was younger

come to think of it there was no speed limit when i was a kid ?
In very limited circumstances only, and don't forget people who have passed their driving test since the mid 90s can only drive up to 3.5 tonne

If you look way down the bottom of this discussion

it appears that you would have to have the vehicle modified so that it couldn't tow a trailer, and replated at under seven and a half tons. You would need a C1 licence, but many older people got that for historical reasons.

thanks for that panic
