I started my cortina today and no heat was blowing out, i noticed water coming from the air pipe and took it off to see anti freeze, obviously the matrix has had it, how easy is it to replace as i got a new one today !

Fair play to you for keeping a car of that age on the road, I have a Mk 1 1983 Sierra and I know that you have to take the clutch pedal to bits to change the heater maxtix, good luck to you sir...
very easy, undo the hoses to the heater ,right hand rear of engine bay, then upper and slightly more difficult lower phillips screws and voila the matrix will pull out.
cortina is one of the more simple ones to replace, i use to take mine out on a regular basis to flush it out with a hosepipe as it kept clogging up...
a couple of self tappers and 2 x jubilee clips..job done
