Does anyone know how to prevent these making that annoying "cracking" sound when they change direction? What's even worse is that sometimes they go quiet for a couple of strokes and then start again!

Put some vinegar on the wiper blades! ( Yes, it does work)
My wipers used to make the same irritating noise. I've now had them replaced. It's always best to buy a slightly more expensive pair of wipers.
Might not be the most convenient solution to you but just buy new ones, changing windscreen wipers should be part of a regular service as well as maintaining your engine / brakes etc.
First clean the screen properly. Use vinegar and newspaper.
Second ensure your blades are less than 12 months old.
Third Make sure the arms are square to the screen. You may need to give a slight twist to the end with some grips. If it does not improve, twist in the opposite direction.

I speak from years of experience with this.
Last success was with my wife's Matiz. We bought those new all rubber blades but still had squeek, judder and missed bits. A quick arm twist sorted it completely!

Many thanks to you all!
Another tip - don't buy the cheaper blades - they only wipe in one direction and tend to make more noise on the return swipe. I usually buy Bosch. Dearer but a little quieter.
the new flat blades are very good - silent even if accidently operated when the screen is dry

"Flat blades"? I've not heard of them. Where can I get them?
