Does the 14 day "leeway" period still apply, giving a driver this time before he HAS to tax his car when it runs out?

it never did apply!

You now have 5days grace but only as long as you ordered your tax disc online before it expired.

Um. Thought so. I guess it was an "urban myth" which worked before the introduction of ANPRs.

there is no leeway, what there is a delay before the authorities will act but the tax is due on the 1st end of.
If you dont get you Vehicle SORN Statutory Off Road Notification and you havent bought the Tax disc you will get an automatic fine.
i think it comes under failing to display a valid road tax disc
i forgot to do it last couple of times and was about 2 weeks late and nothing happened bought it on line and they just sent it
