Brake Judder

My brakes judder a little when braking at motorway speeds. It is worrying me This is felt through the steering column. I recall reading somewhere that this may be due to wheel alignment/tracking or balance (which I know how to fix). Is this true, or could there be another cause? The pads and discs are all around three months old and main dealer fitted.

If it only happens while you are actually braking, I would have thought you have got warped discs. If they are dealer fitted you should have at least 12 months warranty, so get them to check them out.

I had this problem (bad judder when braking from over about 60 mph) and it turned out to be rust on the discs, even though they were less than a year old. The mechanic said this usually happens when a car is laid up for some time but I use mine every day - so still don't know why it happened. It sound as if you have a good argument for having yours replaced free of charge. I had to pay for a new set.

Steering wheel 'judder' is felt when the balancing or alignment is not right on the wheels, but is felt when driving at speed, say over 70mph or between say 60 to 70 and can be 'driven through'  - But braking judder sounds like discs! (might just need 'bedding in' depending how much you've driven since fitting)

I had vibration on braking, felt through steering wheel.. and i've also experienced vibration at certain speeds (e.g. between 50 and 55mph). The last time I had vibration during braking it turned out to be one of the weights on the wheels had fallen off, so I had the wheel balanced again and it cured it.
