I had some new tyres fitted the other day. The tyre fitter was telling me they have a legal obligation to inform the police of any illegal tyre treads/brake parts if they do an inspection but the customer drives off without having the work done. Is this right?

no, complete cobblers, it's just a ruse to flog you tyres. Can you imagine plod being happy with being called by evey tyre place umpteen times a day. These places play on fear. It's up to the individual motorist to be respnsible for their car, end of.

i would assume they have a legal obligation to tell or make the customer aware
a mechanic turning grass.. love it!!! ha ha
If your tyres failed on an MOT this would go on the Dept Transport's computer and if you had a subsequent accident it may invalidate your insurance.
What's that got to do with having tyres fitted, and them trying to flog you more by scaremongery?
MOT stations will play what role ? car jails?
but it didnt fail on an MOT !

anyway you would be surprised how little tyres affect insurance, unless its a major accident and the police are involved most dodgy tyres dont get reported to the insurance company when going through a claim. Bodyshops require work so if they reported illegal tyres that may or may not have a bearing on the accident the claim might be thrown out and they lose the job !..(the tyres would be brought to the attention of the owner )
I think it depends where you live, but where I am,if a taxi driver gets done for a bald tyre he can lose his license.Weird
