In the cold and damp my L reg Renault Clio 1.9 D Oasis isn't starting. It turns over but doesn't spark into life. It starts and still drives well when jump started. The battery did go flat 1 year ago, and I recharged it and it has been working fine. But recently it won't start. I have just bought and fitted a new battery, but it still won't start. I'm not too sure, but could this be a) the alternator, or b) something to do with the heaters that heat the fuel for the ignition. Perhaps these aren't working. Please help me if you can. Thanks very much for your help.

I had the same problem recently, brought on by the bad weather.

I got my spark plugs replaced (about 20) and also got a new air filter(10), to ensure my engine wasn't getting flooded.

Also, if possible, keep the car in a garage, or more sheltered spot rather than in direct wind and rain.

good luck and let us know if this works!

I would strongly suspect that your glowplugs have come to the end of their useful life.

Not familiar with the Clio but had a diesel Peugeot 205 a while back so assume it's similar - ignition is turned part way until the glowplug lamp extinguishes ? A problem particularly apparent in the cold. Not a difficult or too expensive job to have them replaced. Basically like changing 4 spark plugs although the electrical connections are a little more involved.
