I have a 53 megane hatchback that hasstarted making a banging/grinding noise from under the front end. It only does it when coasting and stops when accelertor or brake is pressed. Even when out of gear!! Any ideas before i take it to a garage and get taken for a ride?

I suppose this could be many things .. but it could be a driveshaft CV joint gone. Any load on it could stop the noise.
If it is a joint .. hope they can change just that .. or brace yourself for a driveshaft assy.
I would err towards driveshaft or cv joint
or even wheel bearing
If it is the CV joint like albags says, get it sorted soon, my sisters went on her car a few weeks back and she was stuck 40 miles away from home in the middle of the night, luckily it went while she was moving away at traffic lights at slow sped, if it goes when you are at high speed, its gonna get ugly, just a word of warning. hope you soon find the problem. :-)
