I have had one for two years no problems at all. My ex-boss used to drive his 'banger' from Chelmsford to London every weekday and in nine years it only failed once with electrics - sorted same day and back next day.

I had a Micra for 15 years, I know you say you don't want one but I was a new driver and it did me very well. I've seen your other post and if you are only going to insurance TPFT then you might want to buy something second-hand as you won't be able to claim for any repairs to your own vehicle. I've got a Daihatsu Sirion at the moment, nice roomy little car, 1.3 engine - very pleased with it.
If you can still get one...I had a Datsun 120y,1976/7, turquiose, four door with about 180,000 on the clock, never spent a more than £50 getting through MOT's(mostly tires and windscreen wipers) and it went and went and went most reliable car i ever had whatever the weather it would start (good old manual choke), until i gave to someone and they wrote it off (barstards), wish i still had it ( i doubt the kids would ask for as many lifts as they do if a had my trusty turquiose datsun they'd be to ashamed to get in it!!!)
