For the avoidance of doubt , is the following correct -

1 . When you take out insurance - if you have had a radio and/ or cd player installed which is not the one that came with the car when it was manufactured - it is classed as a modification and you should inform your insurance company ?

2. What if the radio and/or cd player is the type where you can remove the front of it , when you leave the vehicle ?

3. Same as number 1 above, for a portable sat nav ?

Anyone who leaves a sat nav or other valuables on display deserves to be broken into. I had a camera nicked from a car ( in glove box) which cost £1200 to repair ( smashed window & respray of whole of one side) and the insurance co had no probs with the claim. I think it depends on your policy.
1. Yes
2. No different to 1 soyes tell you insurer
3. No - it is not part of your car - but as per earlier answer dont leave it where it can be seen and that includes the charger and the clamp that hold it in place - some thieves will even break in if they can see the suction marks on the screen !

Infact, I do not leave anything in my car where it can be seen and that includes carrier bags and coats - some people will break into your car just to see what is in the bag or under the coat and the damage can be very expensive - and of course you will lose No Claims Bonus if you claim.
My insurance covers my portable satnav provided it is in the locked glovebox when not in use.
I wouldn't bother claiming though, my excess is far higher than the value of the satnav.
