Is 'Top gear' in need of attention.?

A few weeks ago I posted my view on BBC's programme 'Top Gear' and had some interesting responses.

This evening I switched off the TV in disgust after only about ten minutes into the programme.
How many of us are interested in cars that can do over 240 miles per hr when we are restricted to a speed of 70 in the UK.? Furthermore, how many of us can afford a Bugatti.??
No doubt Jeremy Clarkson is being paid a ridiculous fee for what has become a ridiculous programme.

some parts of the show are entertaining, It would be nice to watch a programme that reviews the car market (real cars, real prices) that expands on all elements of driving and ownership.
there are no shows like this as 5th gear seems to be straying into top gear territory a bit more now.. :/

Most cars can exceed 70mph nowadays...its going to be a pretty vacant hour if they only show cars that top out at or below the legal limit
When it was factual nobody watched so they pulled the plug.
People want the drama of seeing cars that they could never afford and more than likely will never see on the road being thrashed around a track. So now its the tv equivalent of a supercar poster it had 8.78 million viewers last week.
If somebody wants to know how the lastest 'normal' car is like to drive then they can book a test drive, or ask a sales rep neighbour or they can buy what car or any of the other factual car magazines that cater for that market.

I am pleased to be receiving so many comments on this matter and,as I began wondering if perhaps I was a little too hasty in turning-off yesterdays showing of 'Top Gear', I have viewed the complete re-run of it this evening on BBC2. Must admit that I did enjoy the tribute to Ayrton Senner, but the rest of the programme was( in my backward thinking!!) a lot of parc. ( apologies if I've offended anyone.)

Perhaps J C has a ghost writer and a ghost driver. I know we see him inside a car but, when a vehicle is filmed going very very fast, it is impossible to see who is inside and driving. In fact I have observed that backdrop scenery through car side windows sometimes appears to be moving somewhat slow in relation to the speed we are told that a car is travelling.

I really like the programme and always find myself watching it, but I find myself thinking I only watch it through lack of an alternative. Clarkson is a funny bloke, but he is also incredibly frustrating, opinionated in all the wrong ways when his knowlege can't back it up. If hear him snearing at vegitarians or joke about running over foxes or leaving the tap on any more i think I might go mental!! The blokes an idiot. May seems the only one who has any sense who doesn't require a throttling! Anyway, despite this I still think it's great show - but only becasue it's written and produced well - and certainly not becasue of the talents of Clarkson. I expect If he saw this post he would make pointed public snears at all the above - but the fact is we are the public. I pay his wage! I don't want to turn on the TV and have a balding tree of a man spout offensive nonsence. The show already got axed once for the same reasons. I know I'm ranting, but were alse can you release your opinions other than an a public forum.
Also - stop smashing up retro cars. Not only can I or most people who watch it not afford any of the cars they review buy a long mile, but I have to listen to Clarkson go on at length at how crap all the cars most people drive are, and watch them demolish some really nice retro tin.

Thanks retrodave for your comments and a belated thank you to all who contributed to my question.
It does seem that we can all enjoy the nonsense which is on 'Top Gear' and many of us agree that Mr Clarkson is somewhat stupid when he presents himself on TV as an authority on all things. I only wish I knew what the BBC pays him for all of his stupid antics, such as indicated by retrodave, smashing-up retro cars etc.
Guess I've now run out of gas.
