Why when accellerating away are there clouds of black smoke being emitted, but which disappear when motoring normally ??

possibly you are pressing the accelerator to hard when the engine is going slowly. when you press the accelerator on a diesel more fuel is injected into the cylinders, If the engine is going slowly it cannot suck enough air in to burn the fuel completely so you get a lot of soot in the exhaust. Check that the air cleaner is not clogged and if it still does it then it may be that the injectors are not spraying properly. Another possible cause is that air is passing the piston rings. A symptom of this is difficult starting and excessive venting from the crankcase.

Many thanks jomifl. I fear it could be the piston rings as I know the owner ( daughter) has had those bad starting symptoms.!!

suggest you try MILLERS fuel additive i have found it works wonders(very good stuff)
cleans injectors also gets rid of gum which could be causeing the rings to stick.

perfectly normal for a turbo diesel to do this,start worrying if it does it when your driving normally

hi, i have an a3 2.0 tdi sport and when i put my foot down and hit high revs my a3 puts out black smoke clouds. its nothing to worry about as its just normal with diesels. as wattee says when it does it under 30mph driving with normal driving then worry.
