Car Dealer Using Agency???

Hi,just a query,I brought a secondhand car in 2009 of ebay and to cut a long story short the car was not as advertised it turned out to be a car derived van not a car,its been through trading standards and is now going throught the counry courts, but what i would like to know is what is the law on a car dealer supposidly using a agency to sell the car for him, as this is what the argument is with the county courts the defendant claims he is not at fault but the agency who sold the car for him, this is a tricky one as the car was brought on his supposidly agents page with dealers phone number on the advert page and the vat invoice was from the car dealers business address, would appreciate any help on this matter,kind regards
